Join MBS and the internationally-recognized photographer, author and printmaker David Saffir (www.davidsaffir.com) for this hands-on intensive workshop where you will learn the ins and outs of accurate BW reproduction.

This is a full-day seminar designed to teach complete workflow for creating exhibition/gallery quality digital fine art black & white prints.

Outline, teaching goals and objectives:

  1. Viewing and discussion of examples of black & white prints in preparation for teaching start-to-
    finish workflow.
  2. Getting it right in the camera: creating color digital captures that will be used for black & white
printing. Evaluate color images for conversion to black & white.
  3. Using Adobe Photoshop, teach the process used to convert digitally captured color images to
black & white, and custom edit as needed. Teach examples using Photoshop filters, presets, and
adjustment layers. Customize tonal values, image density, highlight and shadow details, etc.
Demonstrate using three examples: still life, landscape, and portrait images.
  4. Scanning your film using desktop scanners – settings and customization. Handling scans and
    color management issues.
  5. Importing scanned black and white film images into Photoshop, edit and customize as needed
  6. Evaluating images on screen (soft proofing using custom ICC profiles) for final output. Using
custom adjustments and print variations facilitated by soft proofing.
  7. Criteria for choosing output media, photographic and fine art, for printing black & white.
  8. Discuss issues of using pure blacks to print, vs mixed colorants and their impact on image quality,
and their potential relationship to print archivability. Discuss archival qualities of different
    media/ink combinations.
  9. Teach the complete process needed to make fine art prints from a correctly prepared
image file. This includes methods for creating proof prints that facilitate successful final
prints. Includes use of paper/printer ICC profiles and using the Photoshop printer dialog and
    the appropriate printer driver.
  10. Create prints live. Evaluate final prints for quality.
