Join MBS and the internationally-recognized photographer, author and printmaker David Saffir (www.davidsaffir.com) for this hands-on intensive workshop where you will learn the ins and outs of accurate BW reproduction.
This is a full-day seminar designed to teach complete workflow for creating exhibition/gallery quality
digital fine art black & white prints.
Outline, teaching goals and objectives:
- Viewing and discussion of examples of black & white prints in preparation for teaching start-to-
finish workflow.
- Getting it right in the camera: creating color digital captures that will be used for black & white
printing. Evaluate color images for conversion to black & white.
- Using Adobe Photoshop, teach the process used to convert digitally captured color images to
black & white, and custom edit as needed. Teach examples using Photoshop filters, presets, and
adjustment layers. Customize tonal values, image density, highlight and shadow details, etc.
Demonstrate using three examples: still life, landscape, and portrait images.
- Scanning your film using desktop scanners – settings and customization. Handling scans and
color management issues.
- Importing scanned black and white film images into Photoshop, edit and customize as needed
- Evaluating images on screen (soft proofing using custom ICC profiles) for final output. Using
custom adjustments and print variations facilitated by soft proofing.
- Criteria for choosing output media, photographic and fine art, for printing black & white.
- Discuss issues of using pure blacks to print, vs mixed colorants and their impact on image quality,
and their potential relationship to print archivability. Discuss archival qualities of different
media/ink combinations.
- Teach the complete process needed to make fine art prints from a correctly prepared
image file. This includes methods for creating proof prints that facilitate successful final
prints. Includes use of paper/printer ICC profiles and using the Photoshop printer dialog and
the appropriate printer driver.
- Create prints live. Evaluate final prints for quality.
